AI Builder introduces no-code AI capabilities to the Power Platform. It allows your business to create solutions with the help of Power Automate to simplify common tasks. As of the time that I’m writing this post, AI Builder provides five refinable models and ten that can be used without training. The refinable models can be used to create solutions that are unique to your business. In this post, we’ll take a look at Form Processing.
The Form Processing model allows you to create OCR solutions that will read text from files and—with the use of Power Automate—let you extract that text and do things like store those values in a database. After you choose to create a Form Processing model, you’ll have to provide a name for your model and define the fields that you intend to read from the file. AI Builder provides examples of do’s and don’ts along the way. An example of a ‘do’ is making sure the files that will be read are all in the same format, like an application or invoice. Varying form layouts will make it difficult, if not impossible, for the processor to extract the correct text.
Defining fields is a simple process. Enter any field that you intend to capture, as seen in the image below.
Once the fields are ready, you’ll be asked to create a collection that you will use to provide samples. In this case, our collection will be sample invoices. After you upload, and AI Builder analyzes them, you will go through each invoice that you uploaded and you will begin to map the fields that we previously created to the place where they appear in the files. AI Builder requires that you train a minimum of five files.
Once this step is completed, you will be able to train and publish the model and it’ll be ready for use. In the image above, you can see a sample Flow created with Power Automate and you can see that the properties are available and used to update metadata in a SharePoint document library in 4 simple steps. Power Automate allows you to update other repositories, like SQL tables, with the use of connectors and no need for code.
In a matter of minutes, AI Builder and Power Automate allow you to train a model to use a specific file template, extract the text, and automate tasks using the extracted data. This post just scratches the surface of AI Builder’s capabilities, but you can see how powerful and flexible this service can be.
