Embarking on a digital transformation journey within an organization is a huge undertaking, let alone the success or failure of such an effort. There are two primary challenges that business leaders face in a digital transformation. The first is thinking of digital transformation primarily as a technology initiative. Yes, there is often a lot of technical debt that the company must address, but philosophically this is a business initiative. The biggest gains to be made are from improving, enhancing, or in some cases, radically re-engineering current business processes. Technology can go a long way to making this happen, but it starts with a fundamental re-thinking of how things work today if you can remove constraints (from legacy technology) and through the introduction of net new capabilities (e.g., machine learning or RPA).
